A new born black bear cub clings to the side of a tree ready to begin climbing up into the canopy. Black bear mothers, or sows, will send their cubs into the trees while they go off to forage for the day. Trees like this play the role of nurseries for young black bears, keeping them safe in the canopy of the forest. The cubs aren't always as patient as their mom wishes them to be, however. And after an hour or so, they get restless, playing with each other, or begin crying for mom. The sows will then come back to the nursery tree ever hour or so to check on the cubs, who immediately come scampering down at the first sound of mom's voice.
